Common questions, direct answers
Each page answers one real question and links to deeper guidance.
How long does diarrhea usually last?
Many acute episodes improve in one to several days. Lack of improvement after about two days in an adult, earlier in a child, or symptoms lasting weeks should be assessed.
Is water enough when you have diarrhea?
Water helps, but significant losses also remove electrolytes. Oral rehydration solution may be better for frequent watery stools or signs of dehydration.
Should you fast when you have diarrhea?
Usually no. Drink first and eat according to appetite. Most people can return to normal foods as tolerated.
Do bananas help diarrhea?
Bananas can be easy to tolerate and provide carbohydrate and potassium, but they are not a cure and do not replace balanced hydration.
Can stress cause diarrhea?
Stress can affect intestinal movement and worsen symptoms in some people, but new, severe, bloody, nighttime, or persistent diarrhea should not automatically be blamed on stress.
Is diarrhea contagious?
The symptom itself is not contagious, but many causes—especially viral and bacterial infections—can spread between people.
